Prof. Volkmar Dierolf, together with 5 other Lehigh University Professors, has been named Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors.

Among many other activities Dierolf's main research is dedicated to the study of foreign atoms in semiconductors. Such atoms constitute defects in the crystal lattice of the host material, and they can   be used to engineer new abilities like light emission at specific wavelengths  for future micro-displays or other optoelectronic devices.  Dierolf has a long-standing research program dedicated to understanding the role of defects in insulating and semiconducting materials and leveraging these insights to create innovative optical materials and devices.
